Hilary Backus was elected as the State President of the Queensland Association of State School Principals (QASSP) at the end of 2010 and took up the full time office in January 2011.
She feels privileged to serve the members of QASSP and is passionate about the professional leadership of school principals, their welfare and advocacy on their behalf.
Hilary has a diverse background. Her initial training was in secondary physical education, with later studies in Graduate Diploma in Primary & Infants, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Educational Administration. She has taught in various settings around Australia, including primary, secondary and tertiary in such places as Kununurra, WA, Toomelah and Boggabilla, NSW and various small schools around Quirindi in NSW.
Hilary’s principals positions were at Tulloona Primary School, NSW (1 teacher) (5 years), Anakie State School (4 years) and Springsure State School (P – 10) (2 years) in Central Queensland and at Indooroopilly State School (8 ½ years) in Brisbane.
Hilary’s involvement in QASSP has spanned over 15 years, and she was awarded Life Membership in 2009 for her contribution to the association’s conferences and sponsorships. She sees QASSP as a vital network of principals where they are able to learn together and support one another; where they are able to influence the education agenda through strong branches, state council, management committee and subcommittees.
Hilary is honoured to be the first female president representing members from all around Queensland. Click here to download this profile in PDF format.
